As-Salaam u ' Alaikum wa Rahmatullaahi wa Barakaatuh,
I ' m sorry, as I can ' t think of a proper introduction for this email, or an
introduction for myself, but insha-Allah I shall try and do the best I can.
First off, I am sure that you have heard from many people that this is really
a wonderful and amazing thing that you are trying to implement via the
Masjids.org website, but I just thought that insha-Allah I should let you know
that I also feel the same way, and probably about as passionately as you do.
I ' m a college student and I suppose somewhat active in the MSA; I help
coordinate events, classes, etc. Before I got to know about your mission, I
myself was thinking for a while, that we so despesrately need a network in
Atlanta, (I was thinking small scale, like universities, the around 13
masjids, humanity organizations, etc.) that would bring back this form of
communication, dawah, and unity, that your website is hoping to achieve insha-
Allah. I also feel very strongly that the Masjid is such a crucial part to
bringing the Ummah together, and to strengthen ourselves as individuals by
accessing these avenues of knowledge so interspersed throughout our
community. I had thought to start a newsletter email perhaps, (very very
simple however as I am extremely burdened with schoolwork unfortunately), that
would basically allow all masjids, universities, organizations to announce
what events are being held, which scholars are coming to speak, what classes
are being offered, etc. This concept of an bayans available, and a truer
network of people through masjids.org is a step up above that and amazing
masha-Allah, and I do hope insha-Allah we can get our community here in
Atlanta involved.
I had a few concerns. Masha-Allah the pricing is extremely cheap that is
offered by Masjids.org, but i am concerned about how to get big masjids like
Masjid al-Farooq and Masjid Al-Hedaya, who have maintained websites to move
over to Masjids.org. (Which, if they already have decided to do this, and I
am way outdated, we can move on to my next concern). I do know of a few very
well-equipped (with classes, speakers, etc.) masjids that I wonder if they
would be able to afford it, or would make the effort to maintain a website.
Here ' s where my idea comes in. I know that you are concerned with this being
a national effort subhan-Allah, but I would be really interested to get our
community here in Atlanta buckled. We could promote this idea via flyers to
all the Masjids (which again, if I ' m outdated, I apologize), and raise money
through donations at each individual mosque for their website. Or, I am
wondering, if we could possibly chunk Masjids in Atlanta together, and have
perhaps a group of representatives of all the Masjids, that could allow a few
people to update the website(s) together.
The reason I am proposing this idea is for a few reasons:
1. if all the majlis ' s of an area (which could vary in size) could come
together promoting the same values, we could integrate our communities. You
may or may not have noted that there are a lot of race majorities between
masjids in Atlanta, and a mentality that starts to separate one masjid from
another sometimes.
2. if a smaller masjid cannot afford a website, they can still announce their
events, or classes, or counseling hours, or whatever.
3. if masjids of a locality come together, we are 10-fold more efficient, more
powerful in what we can accomplish, and more effective as an influencing group
on the Ummah.
4. possibly, if we were to incorporate university events into a community type
website, is it not possible that many college students who value their college
events, but do not know the importance of the masjid, may come to learn and
value the masjid for what it really is?
I feel like this could cause for a massive change in our community. Perhaps
our biggest downfall right now is that we are so segregated, so aloof from
each other, simply because of a lack of communication and structure. Anyways,
I could go on talking about this issue, but I just wanted to bring up the idea
first, because what better place to bring community masjids together than at
masjids.org.
May Allah bless you and your efforts insha-Allah.
Jaza ' k Allah khair.
